MASVINGO—According to reports, the lack of readily available Zimbabwean Gold (ZIG) cash has led to Masvingo taxi drivers issuing token papers as a change to passengers. While this enables them to continue operating during the currency transition, it inconveniences commuters.
These tokens are believed to represent the owed fare and cannot be immediately used for purchases elsewhere. Passengers would need to locate the same driver again to exchange them for cash, a task made difficult by the unpredictable nature of many taxi routes.
Experts suggest solutions to alleviate these issues. Taxi drivers could provide receipts alongside the token, detailing the amount owed and the redemption process. Clear directives from authorities would also be beneficial, informing passengers and drivers of their rights and responsibilities during this transitional period. Exploring alternative payment methods, such as mobile money, could eliminate the need for tokens.
