As the nation is battling with the effects of Elnino, Buhera communities are suffering the double impacts as water challenges in Buhera.

Buhera East ward 16 representative of Nechavava headman Silvanos Mugorogodi said Buhera is now facing more water challenges due to Elnino induced drought as the nation received little rainfall this year.

“We have some community boreholes here but these boreholes are not situated in every community and some elderly women have to walk long distances to fetch water. Due to Elnino induced droughts water water levels have become so low that it has become hard to pump the water out of the boreholes.

“Because of the Elnino enduced droughts we need to resort to irrigation practices and we plea assistance to those who can assist with more boreholes and taps so that we can practice garden farming for food security in this drought,” said Mugorogodi.

Women from Buhera plead with those who can assist with providing boreholes and taps so that they will continue with their gardening projects in fighting the climate disaster.

“As a community we are practicing garden farming for cash crops that will improve our lives and for food security but due to this year’s drought we are facing water challenges and our crops have dried up.

“We are coming from very long distances with water for watering our plants and it becomes a challenge for one to farm a bigger portion and at the end of the day we will suffer from food shortages,” said one woman from Buhera.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has declared a state of disaster after the Elnino induced droughts and said the foregoing situation requires measures and interventions.
